Must-see places in Florida
There is a lot more to see in Florida than beaches, Disneyworld, and Miami. I wanted to put together a blog post with some of our amazing discoveries so far. These, except the last two, are places we visited and loved for various reasons. I recommend reading the blog posts about each place that interests you, as they contain details from our visits as well as tips and [fun] facts.
Let’s jump in!
Manatee Viewing Center in Tampa.
A must-visit here in Tampa, and the best part is that it’s absolutely free and perfect for kids. We went there twice so far and were lucky to see manatees (and lots of sharks) both times. *Open from November to April.
Saint Augustine, a slice of Europe in Florida.
I have to admit it — I was quite smitten with the oldest city in the United States. There is so much variety here that chances are high for everyone to love it. I truly felt like I was in Europe in some parts of it, and I won’t lie, it made me happy!
Wild Florida, a drive-through safari park, and more.
We really liked visiting this place and plan to make another trip there sometime soon. It’s a unique experience in Florida and one we found 100% worth the fairly long drive from Tampa. There is a lot to do and see with kids and without, so definitely plan to spend an entire day there.
Solomon's Castle in Ona, Florida.
This was a random discovery of ours, but a very interesting one, I might add. Solomon’s Castle is unique and so… Florida. *Closed in August.
A quick stroll through Tarpon Springs, Florida.
Tarpon Springs is a slice of Greece in Florida. With a higher Greek population than any other place in the United States, this city is a hidden gem worth exploring (and tasting).
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.
This place is heaven for plant lovers and more. It features an orchid greenhouse (that I have yet to explore), a succulent garden, and wonderful other corners. It seems to always have something going on — cool exhibits and events, expansions, and so on. I think we’re overdue for another visit. *Don’t miss the two must-visit locations Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.
Ca’ D’Zan, a slice of Venice in Sarasota.
I called it a slice of Venice, and believe me, it is, but there’s so much more going on here. The Ringling Museum (yes, the famous circus) is here and it’s an experience you can’t miss. Do take the time to stroll the gardens and grounds — they’re a visual delight!
Caspersen Beach Park in Venice, FL.
This is a popular place for fossilized finds, but, it also has a different kind of reputation. I recommend it for beach combing, and for its beauty, but I’d advise reading my blog post about our visit so you’re more aware than I was…
This is one of my very favorite places in Florida (and one that is calling me back). Nestled in the highest point in Florida, Bok Tower Gardens boast stunning views, gardens, and architecture, as well as a kind of serenity not experienced in most places in the State. Great for kids and adults.
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami.
If Ca’ D’Zan is a slice of Venice in Florida, then Vizcaya is a slice of Italy in Florida (with a side of iguanas). With incredible architecture, interior, and gardens that will wow you at every corner, this place is a must-see. The stories it could tell…
We briefly visited it but found it charming enough to want to come back. With an abundance of beautiful beaches, historic landmarks, local shops, etc., this place is 100% made of vacation vibes.
This is a place that’s been on my list for a while, however, my curiosity is overtaken by the fact that to get in the den, one must know how to swim or be comfortable in deep water… and I’m neither of those things… You can most certainly walk the grounds, but, what’s the fun in that? Either way, I think it’s worth discovering.
Another recent discovery, Glamping Florida seems to be a unique experience in the state, and one I’m intrigued by. Have you ever heard of it or stayed there?
This list will grow as we visit more places as, in truth, is quite a limited one. But it’s a start…
